About

Our goals for the Max Planck - Yale Center for Biodiversity Movement and Global Change

  • Embark on novel biodiversity research, infrastructure, education, and project funding opportunities uniquely made possible by combining the complementary strengths in technology and data collection at the Max-Planck Institute for Ornithology (MPIO) and spatial and environmental analysis at Yale and by attaining a critical mass for major advances.

  • Collaboratively advance the science and technology for the i) tracking, prediction and understanding of biodiversity movement across temporal scales, ii) the distributions of individuals, populations and species in changing landscapes and iii) the use of mobile organisms as sentinels of global change.

  • Integrate the concepts and methods of the newly emerging field of ‘Movement Ecology’ with those of Global Change Biology and Remote Sensing to develop a more fundamental and predictive framework for the study of biodiversity and change across spatial scales.

  • Foster the knowledge, technology exchange, and joint training of a new generation of scientists versed in the quantitative use and interpretation of large biological, spatial, and environmental data derived from multiple, rapidly advancing technologies.

  • Educate undergraduate and graduate students about the broader challenges faced by biodiversity in a rapidly changing world and how novel technology and research may support a better management and conservation of the vital functions and services biodiversity provides.
